School Administration Job Responsibilities

Title:

Early Childhood Teacher

Reports to:

Principal

General Definition of Work:

To promote early childhood development by planning and implementing developmentally appropriate lessons, fostering social-emotional growth, and preparing students for kindergarten in alignment with Virginia’s Early Learning and Development Standards (ELDS).

Essential Functions:

  •  Develop and implement engaging, age-appropriate lesson plans that support cognitive, social, emotional, and physical development.
  • Create a safe, inclusive, and nurturing classroom environment that encourages curiosity, independence, and positive peer interactions.
  • Use play-based and structured learning activities to encourage exploration and problem-solving skills.
  • Assess and monitor student progress through observations, assessments, and documentation, while maintaining accurate student records and preparing progress reports.
  • Manage classroom behavior using positive guidance and Conscious Discipline strategies, while promoting the safety, health, and well-being of each child.
  • Maintain open, consistent, communication with parents/guardians regarding student development, behavior, and needs.
  • Collaborate with other preschool teachers, aides, and specialists (e.g., special education staff, and/or related service providers).
  • Participates in county and grade level Professional Development, including regular CLASS observations and coaching sessions, using feedback to strengthen teacher-child interactions.
  • Implements research-based strategies to promote responsive, engaging, high-quality interactions that support children’s development and aligned with the CLASS framework and early childhood best practices.
  • Maintain the classroom, equipment, and materials to ensure a clean, safe, organized, and developmentally supportive learning environment.
  • Maintain all essential records required for the efficient operation of the classroom and school.
  • Stay informed on current developments in early childhood and demonstrate ongoing professional growth.
  • Support and contribute to school-wide initiatives, curriculum discussions, and decision-making processes.
  • Maintain a collaborative, professional, and supportive attitude toward all school personnel and serve as a positive representative of the school division within the community.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal or his/her designee.

Education and Job Experience:

Compensation will be based on degree and experience as described in the Amherst County Public School Teachers’ Salary Scale Schedule

License/Endorsements:

Valid certification to meet state requirements with specific endorsement in the area to which assigned

Contract Period:

10 months
