Reports to: Supervisor of Maintenance

 

General Definition of Work: Performs intermediate semi skilled work performing maintenance and repair work in carpentry, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, masonry, roofing or related field and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Supervisor of Maintenance.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Installs and repairs exhaust fans; repairs and replaces skylights
  • Assists in the installation and replacement of electrical equipment, wiring, breakers, switches, controls, motors, etc.; repairs outlets, cords, plugs; replaces light bulbs, lamps and fixtures
  • Fabricates and installs playground equipment, fences and gates; inspects playground equipment to ensure user safety
  • Installs and maintains internal and external school signage
  • Repairs doors and windows
  • Assembles and/or repairs furniture for classrooms and offices; assembles and sets-up cabinets, equipment and shelving; repairs office machines
  • Installs, rebuilds and maintains plumbing in buildings; installs faucets, flush valves, temperate gauges, etc.; troubleshoots, repairs, replaces and fabricates various plumbing fixtures and associated equipment
  • Installs maps and murals in classrooms
  • Assists in framing, pouring and finishing concrete fixtures
  • Delivers food items and supplies to various schools; removes food from faulty freezers; inspects and maintains grease traps and interceptors; performs heavy cleaning on various kitchen equipment
  • Completes work orders; assists maintenance technicians with various building, facility and ground maintenance tasks
  • Prepares reports, timesheets, logs and records as required
  • Assists with grass cutting, weed eating, mulching, snow removal and ice control when needed.
  • Performs various other tasks associated with general carpentry, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, masonry, roofing or related trades/professions

This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking, speaking or hearing and using hands to finger, handle or feel, frequently requires sitting, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling and lifting and occasionally  requires climbing or balancing; work has standard visions requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arms-length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work frequently requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and occasionally  requires working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles and exposure to the risk of electrical shock; work occasionally requires exposure to bloodborne pathogens and bodily fluids and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic)

 

Education and Job Experience: General knowledge of the common practices, tools and terminology of the mechanical or building trade to which assigned; general knowledge of the use and characteristics of common building materials; general knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions associated with the assigned trade; skill in the use of tools and equipment; ability to work from sketches, drawings, plans or specifications; ability to follow oral and written instructions; ability to estimate needed materials and time required for various jobs; good physical condition; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates. A high school diploma or high school equivalency certificate and moderate experience in building and facility maintenance, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

A valid driver’s license from the Commonwealth of Virginia is required.

 

Contract Period: 12 months
