Reports to: Automotive Technician/Shop Supervisor

 

General Definition of Work: Performs intermediate skilled work repairing, servicing and maintaining gasoline and diesel powered school buses and other automotive equipment, preparing and maintaining records and files, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Automotive Technician/Shop Supervisor.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Performs Department of Education required periodic preventive maintenance
  • Diagnoses, adjusts, repairs and services gasoline and diesel powered vehicles
  • Operates various types of shop equipment, machinery, precision instruments, specialized tools and devices
  • Performs preventive maintenance inspections on buses, vans, medium and light duty trucks and automobiles
  • Changes oil and filters; lubricates buses and other school vehicles
  • Repairs and replaces engine and/or engine parts on buses and school vehicles
  • Maintains and issues state inspection stickers
  • May serve as a bus driver when required

This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking, speaking or hearing and using hands to finger, handle or feel, frequently requires pushing or pulling and lifting and occasionally requires sitting; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arms-length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires exposure to fumes or airborne particles, frequently requires exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to vibration and occasionally requires working near moving mechanical parts and exposure to the risk of electrical shock; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).

 

General knowledge of the methods, tools and equipment used in the repair of buses, automotive passenger cars, trucks and maintenance equipment; general knowledge of and skill in the use and operation of shop tools and machinery, ability to detect by inspection any worn or broken automotive parts; ability to adapt tools and repair parts to specific repair problems; agility to interpret and work from sketches, diagrams and installation and repair charts; ability to follow oral and written instructions accurately; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates. A high school diploma or high school equivalency certificate and considerable experience in the repair of buses, trucks and automotive equipment, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

A valid commercial driver’s license with School Bus endorsement in the Commonwealth of Virginia is required.

 

Contract Period: 12 months
